Martin Webster, 32 years old, was in the Light Infantry for 11 and a half years. He served two operational tours in Northern Ireland, one in Sierra Leone and one in Iraq.

He reached the rank of Corporal and served in a mortar division. Webster filmed a beating incident in Iraq 2004, which hit the headlines in 2006. After being arrested, even though no charges were brought against him, Webster left the army.

Now he is out of the army and is writing and performing with other ex-servicemen. ‘Voices of War’ was formed by Webster and a group of ex-servicemen who are not happy with the outcome of the Iraq war. The main aim is to urge the government to take more responsibility for post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and to increase support, funding and awareness. VOW is an alliance to get the message across using music and art, “so soldiers can hold their heads up and not be ashamed,” Webster explains. VOW has so far raised £900 for the British legion and Combat stress.

For the last two years, Webster has been involved in the making of a documentary ‘Diary of a Disgraced Soldier’ following his life after leaving the army. This documentary contains video diaries charting Webster’s personal thoughts and feelings while adjusting to life outside the army. It shows his expression through painting and music, as well as witnessing the creation of ‘Voices of War’.


Der 32 Jahre alte Martin Webster war elfeinhalb Jahre Soldat in der Leichten Infanterie in Grossbritannien. Er war zwei Mal in Nordirland eingesetzt worden, einmal in Sierra Leo-ne und einmal im Irak. Er erreichte den Rang eines Unteroffiziers und diente in einer Mörserdivision. Webster filmte 2004 im Irak eine Niederlage während des Kriegseinsat-zes, mit der er 2006 Schlagzeilen machte. Obwohl es keine Anklage gegen ihn gab, wur-de er inhaftiert. Danach verliess Webster die Armee.
Heute schreibt und tritt er gemeinsam mit anderen ehemaligen Soldaten auf. Mit einer Gruppe von Veteranen, die mit dem Ausgang des Irakkrieges nicht glücklich sind, grün-dete er "Voices of War". Das wichtigste Ziel der Gruppe ist es, die Regierung zur Über-nahme einer stärkeren Verantwortung für PTSD-Fälle zu drängen und die Unterstützung und Aufmerksamkeit für die Betroffenen zu stärken. "Voices of War" vermittelt die Bot-schaft über Musik und Kunst.
In den letzten beiden Jahren war Webster mit der Erstellung der Dokumentation "Tage-buch eines in Unehre gefallenen Soldaten" beschäftigt, die seinem Leben nach dem Ver-lassen der Armee folgt. Seine Dokumentation enthält Videotagebücher mit Websters per-sönlichen Gedanken und Gefühlen. Es zeigt seine Gemälde und Musik, wie auch die Ent-stehung von "Voices of War".
