Hybrid Radio Art Networks

Kunstradio and Soundproof are two pioneering public radio art institutions.

Their producers Elisabeth Zimmermann and Miyuki Jokiranta, dedicated radio promoters and key conduits for international radio art, entered into a conversation with Corax radiomaker Helen Hahmann about the significance of radio art in public radio programming. While Elisabeth Zimmermann´s Kunstradio at Austria's national public broadcasting service ORF looks back at an unbroken history of radio art production since 1987, Miyuki Jokiranta had only three short years to establish a remarkable archive of radio art broadcasts at Australia's national broadcasting corporation ABC before her programme Soundproof was cut in the autumn of 2016. Both are busy building important points of contact within the international radio art sphere. In this conversation the respective historical backgrounds of their services are outlined, and future structures for the genre and curational roles are reflected upon. The conversation was conducted through a conference telephone session in December 2017 connecting the radio studio of Radio Corax, the Kunstradio office in Vienna and the home of Miyuki Jokiranta in Melbourne, Australia. Firstly, Elisabeth Zimmermann reflects on the intermediary role of radio artists, who move between informal radio art networks like Radia, community radio stations, online radio art projects and the rare opportunities to broadcast on public radio.

The conversation with Elisabeth Zimmermann and Miyuki Jokiranta will be published in the book "Radio Revolten – 30 Days of Radio Art". Edited by: Radio CORAX. The book will be published in Juni 2018 by Spector Books, Leipzig.
